Burial & Cemetery Information

The Saint Mary of Sorrows cemetery is located at our Historic Church in Fairfax Station — the same grounds where Clara Barton nursed the wounded during the Civil War. The cemetery has been consecrated ground since 1838 and is open dawn to dusk, 365 days a year.

Eligibility

Burial plots and cremation units are available for individuals who have been registered parishioners of Saint Mary of Sorrows for at least one year. Plots may also be made available at the Pastor's discretion.

Plot Specifications
  • Standard burial plots: 3.5 feet wide × 9 feet long
  • Cremation plots: 3.5 feet × 9 feet
  • Infant lots: 2 feet × 4 feet
  • Concrete vaults or liners are required for all burials
  • A perpetual care fee is included in the plot purchase price
Scheduling
  • Interments are not permitted on weekends, holidays, or certain church observances
  • 72-hour advance notice is required for grave opening

Monuments & Markers

All memorials must comply with the following:

  • Stone color: Gray, white, charcoal, or black only
  • Shape: Rectangular or square
  • Maximum height: 3'6" from ground
  • Maximum width at base: 3'
